From Shakespeare to Dolly Parton, Jam, the new Sappho and #Session Live by Tina Mweni

From a first rock album that smelled of drum machine and punk spirit, Sappho went to other voices, those of the roots, with panache. We can say without being mistaken about Sapho that she is a woman of the world, “a singer of the world” as she defines herself. Sapho sings the world and sings for it, in French, Spanish, Arabic or Hebrew. Singer and musician, writer, but also painter and poet, Sapho found herself an artist at the confluence of multiple influences, in love as much with Janis Joplin and Oum Kalthoum as with Léo Ferré and Mahmoud Darwich. Then we receive Tina Mweni in the #Live Session for the release of the album Nakiyimba (WePresent)

In March 2020when Tina must return to Denmark due to the Covid pandemic after 5 years spent in Marseille, a city artistically bubbling with a human warmth that reminds him of his native country (Kenya), it’s a cold shower… a period conducive to introspection, but also to doubt, follows. It is in this global and personal storm that Tina had to find inspiration, that of life, the life of her best friend Nakiyimba who killed himself a few years earlier. This album is therefore a tribute to her friend Nakiyimba, but also an ode to life to give hope to all young women who have to fight to get by. Tina takes us on a powerful emotional journey where his voice sometimes spoken, sometimes rapped or sung accompanies a rich musical universe tinged with Hip-Hop, Afrobeat and Funk.

Nakiyimba is also the fruit of the meeting between Tina Mweni and David Walters with whom she has collaborated on stage on numerous occasions, then on the musical production of this 2nd album. Tina Mweni particularly likes to step out of her comfort zone by confronting new artistic styles. Nakiyimba is an album where emotion and intention take precedence over pure technique and where the music of David Walters with his unique touch transcends genres and mixes atmospheres both Hip-Hop, Soul / Funk accompanied by Electro and African Music. Tina Mweni also gives pride of place to guest artists who have marked his musical career. We thus find featuring the Kenyan singer and musician Makademthe Tanzanian singer and rapper Domokayathe Marseille rapper K-Meleonthe Togolese singer and musician Alain Apaloo as well as the Kenyan rapper robah Mwenyeji.
