From now on you can experience one of the most magical moments in video game history on PC for the first time

With Red Dead Redemption, one of the best games of all time was released for the PC for the first time on October 29, 2024, for Steam and the Epic Games Store. MeinMMO editor Karsten Scholz still gets goosebumps when he sees a scene from the open-world Western.

What kind of scene is this? Similar to the sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, there is also a scene in Rockstar Games’ first western epic in which you ride with your main character (here: John Marston) through the vastness of the Wild West while the events of the last one unfold Hang on your neck for hours and at the same time the endless expanses of the prairie give you a feeling of freedom.

As Marston approaches the Mexican border on his horse, suddenly – and for the first time ever up to this point – a song can be heard from the speakers. “Far Away” by Jose Gonzalez. The song fits Edgar Ross like John’s fist in the eye. The lines create wanderlust and connection, the melody is touching, the song captures the cowboy in each of us.

What sounds a little cheesy has actually blown an incredible number of players out of their seats emotionally over the years. This is proven by the countless comments on the various videos on YouTube that show the crossing of the Mexican border, accompanied by “Far Away”. Here you can see the scene including the dialogue that took place shortly before:

What does the community say about the scene?

  • UNITDW writes on YouTube: “I arrived in Mexico during a sunset with a bright orange sky, and I’ve never had a better gaming experience.”
  • lankybassbro recalls on YouTube: “Everyone says they had this moment during a sunset, that sounds amazing too, but for me it happened at night, in the middle of the pouring rain, and I felt like it was absolutely perfect.”
  • EdoloChannel also knows the iconic song from part 2 (via YouTube): “To be clear: Unshaken from RDR2 was pure magic, but this? You can’t beat that. This moment is game history.”
  • darthkahn45 salutes this class on YouTube: “- Good luck, John. You’re an angry and damn ugly man… but not a bad one. – John rides off to this song. Best level intro ever.”
  • drawingthemoon will never forget this scene (via YouTube): “I played this scene three hours after we kids found out our dad had been diagnosed with stage 4, and it was night and raining both in the game and outside. I finished the scene, put the controller down and cried. My father lived for another year after his diagnosis and passed away on Father’s Day. I will never forget this scene.”

What about the comparable scene from the sequel? In Red Dead Redemption 2 there is a counterpart scene in which you have to take a long ride with Arthur Morgan back to Shady Belle – while D’Angelo sings his song “Unshaken”. Because of all the things that have happened up to that point, it’s an emotional journey that won’t leave anyone indifferent.

What do I need to know about the PC port of RDR? Since October 29, 2024, you can get the Game of the Year version of Red Dead Redemption (including the Undead Nightmare expansion) for the first time on Steam and via the Epic Games Store. The PC port offers the following technical features:

  • NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation
  • Natural 4k resolution
  • Support for Ultrawide and Super Ultrawide
  • HDR10 support, full keyboard and mouse functions
  • Support for NVIDIA DLSS 3.7 and AMD FSR 3.0
  • The price is just under 50 euros.

Is Red Dead Redemption still fun today? RDR is a typical Rockstar game, with all the narrative and gameplay qualities that you can also find in the sequel, in the GTA series or in Max Payne.

It was only the Switch port last year that proved that the game can keep up with modern open-world adventures. Even the technology is completely ok thanks to the remaster version. The only thing that was annoying on Nintendo’s handheld console hybrid was the constant flickering of edges and the rather high price, and RDR isn’t cheap on PC either.
