Many Utrecht residents will still remember the C&A as the building looked like in 1967 after a few expansions. A concrete colossus with a somewhat open appearance. “It was natural stone,” Den Boer corrects, “but it did look like concrete.” Surprisingly enough, the same architect designed the modern facade, says the publicist. “Van der Laan was C&A’s house architect. He also shows an increasing modernist influence in later works, such as at the city hall of Eindhoven.”
