From iOS 14, you finally have the right to choose the applications to be used by default on your iPhone or iPad instead of those imposed by Apple. And in particular replace Safari with the web browser of your choice.
Small earthquake in the Apple microcosm! With the arrival of iOS 14, you can now choose to no longer use Safari as a web browser on your iPhone or iPad! In fact, up to iOS 13, even if one of the many other Internet browsers had been installed on the App Store (Chrome, Edge, Brave, DuckduckGo, Opera, etc.), the simple fact of touching up a link to a web page (a URL) invariably and necessarily lasses Safari.
Certain applications already made it possible to bypass this obligation by offering a specific internal setting to choose the browser to be launched (as here in the Spark Email Management Application).
But it only works from this application, and not overall at the system level. To use our example, you choose to open links in Chrome from Spark, but as soon as you touch a shared link in Twitter, it’s Safari that returns.
With iOS 14, everything changes. As on PC or Mac, it is therefore now possible to choose your internet browser and to make it get started whatever the place from which you type on an URL.
Note that all the Internet browsers available on the App Store are not necessarily compatible with this new function of the iOS 14 system. It must first of all have been updated and that Apple has validated it. We can regret the tight control of Apple, but it is also a question of security in order to prevent a “real/false” navigator from trying to spy on, illegally, everything you do online!
How to replace Safari with Chrome on iPhone or iPad?
Chrome is the most popular browser of all. If it is already your daily browser on your computer, you might as well do the one you will use by default on your iPhone or iPad, especially if you use the functions associated with a Google account, such as the synchronization of favorites or the memorization of passwords.
- If you have not yet installed the Google browser on your iPhone, go to theApp Store To do it and look for Google Chrome.
- To start the installation, type on the button Get – or on the cloud with an arrow pointing down, if you have already installed the application at least once on your iPhone.
- Then go to the Settings of your iPhone.
- Scroll down the screen – which can be a bit long if you have installed a lot of applications -, then type on the line Chromium.
- Type on the line Default browser app – You see Safari designated by default.
- Choose Chromium in the next screen.
- That’s it! The Google browser will now launch automatically to display all the web pages on your iPhone.
How to replace Safari with Firefox or Edge on iPhone?
Chrome is not the only alternative to Safari. You can also choose to install Firefox from Mozilla or Edge from Microsoft and make one or the other your default browser. The main interest of the approach is that you can take advantage of the mechanisms for synchronizing passwords and the favorites offered by all browsers and thus automatically find your information identically on your iPhone and your computer. The procedure is the same as that for Chrome.
- Once your favorite browser is installed, return to the Settings of your iPhone.
- In the list of applications, type on The name of the browser that you want to use by default
- In the next screen, type on Default browser app.
- The list of all installed browsers is displayed. Select the one that interests you. It’s done !
How to replace Safari with another browser on iPhone?
Apple often highlights, with reason, the online anti-spying mechanisms integrated into its browser. But others do just as well, even better, by integrating for example an more advertising blocker (while this requires the installation of an additional content blogger for Safari). This is the case for example of Firefox Focus, the other Mozilla browser that can be installed on your iPhone. Admittedly, this browser does not yet offer the possibility of being chosen by default. But that shouldn’t be long.
If English does not put you off, you can also choose to install DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser as default browser. Designed by the creators of the DuckDuckGo search engine, it is as effective in its results as discreet in its operation since it does not keep any history of your research. And the iPhone browser is also responsible for blocking all the tracers integrated into the websites you visit.
You have understood now, whatever the browser you want to activate by default, the procedure is the same: install the browser and go to the settings to indicate your choice to the iPhone.
