Frölunda has completed yet another new acquisition.
And again it’s through a cheeky signing coup.
Right in front of the eyes of the worst rival Färjestad.
Frölunda continues to build a powerful team for the upcoming SHL season. On the forward side, both top names have been picked up Gustav Rydahl and Malte Strömwall.
Frölunda recruits
Now the SHL team from Gothenburg has completed another new acquisition to the forward set-up. On Wednesday, it will be announced that Frölunda has come to an agreement Erik Thorell.

The 31-year-old recently broke his contract with Sparta Prague and is now moving home to Swedish hockey again.
– Really nice that Frölunda showed interest. It went quickly and we had a good chat, Frölunda has an eye on me, says Thorell in his first interview as a Frölunda player.
– Erik is a fast-paced forward who has developed his offense over the past five, six years, says the sports manager Fredrik Sjöström in a press release about the new signing.

Played for FBK
Thorell began his hockey career with Färjestads BK but has since been around Europe and played in Finland, Switzerland and most recently the Czech Republic. But he hasn’t played in the SHL since 2013.
– It was a while ago, but I know that the SHL is one of the top leagues, and I have developed my game during my years abroad. I like to work hard both ways and am offensive and creative, says Thorell in the interview on the club’s official website.

But again, it is a signing that includes both arch-rivals Frölunda and Färjestad. Most recently it was Rydahl who snubbed FBK to instead go to FHC and as recently as two weeks ago Thorell pulled on the Färjestads jersey to play a match during the pre-season.
– He played in a match during our ice debut. He was one of several foreign professionals with a connection to us that we invited, says Färjestad’s sports manager Richard Wallin for SportExpressen.

It was the Rydahl signing that caused strong reactions among supporters, but this time it is not as emotional.
– This is not about someone breaking someone. Erik has not been relevant to us. He is a great guy and we wish him the best of luck in the future, Wallin explains in the interview.
