The nine companions from Lord of the Rings couldn’t be more different. They must first join forces together, then in different places, to defeat Sauron. We’ll look at which of them are the strongest in the ranking.
How was the ranking created? The Fellowship of the Ring is all very different. Representatives of various peoples of Middle Earth, namely humans, elves, wizards, dwarves and hobbits, join forces to support Frodo on his mission to destroy the One Ring.
For our ranking, we compared the abilities of the individual companions and came to a conclusion. Please note that “strength” does not necessarily have to be physical. We also took into account individual actions without which the rescue of Middle Earth would probably not have been possible.
In the end, the ranking is of course subjective, so please write us your opinion in the comments.
Warning spoilers: Below we reveal individual details from all three parts of Lord of the Rings. If you are one of the few who do not know the films or books, you are hereby warned.
9th place: Boromir
Someone has to be last, and in this list it is the human Boromir. Yes, he may be a good and strong fighter, but unfortunately he also has a great mental weakness. The One Ring captivates him from the very beginning. At the first meeting in Rivendell, Boromir suggests not destroying the ring, but using it for his own purposes.
On the later journey, he tries to take the ring from Frodo. Being close to him is enough to seduce him. One positive aspect, however, is Boromir’s heroic commitment to Pippin and Merry at the end of the first part – an act for which he pays with his life.
8th place: Pippin
The hobbit Pippin loves pipeweed and has become one of the Fellowship more or less by chance. What he lacks in strength and skill in battle, he makes up for with wit and unshakable optimism. This is how he keeps the Fellowship in good spirits.
Pippin resisted the power of the Palantir, one of the Seeing Stones, through which he briefly looked Sauron in the eye. He also lit the fires of Minas Tirith, alerting allies to the city’s plight.
7th place: Merry
The race between Merry and Pippin is very close. The quirky hobbit is not a born fighter either, although he puts on armor and tries his hand at swordplay over the course of the films.
Merry is much more impressive because of his temperament. Like Pippin, he is often in a good mood, but in the decisive moments he recognizes the seriousness of the situation. It was Merry who persuaded the Ents around Treebeard to make their final march – after angrily commenting on their unwillingness to go into battle. Without the Ents, Isengard might not have fallen, which puts Merry in 7th place.
