Everyone does it with their fridge, it’s a mistake and your food is poorly preserved
We all have our little habits with our refrigerator. Whether it’s the way we put our foods, the temperature we are paying or the frequency of cleaning, these gestures seem trivial. However, some current errors can affect the good preservation of food. One of the most widespread errors is to poorly store food in the refrigerator, and more particularly in the fridge door. And yes, each food has its own place in the refrigerator!
Did you know that in most refrigerators, each area has a different temperature and must only accommodate certain foods? “A conventional refrigerator consists of a fresh part at the top and a colder part at the bottom” explains Delphine Vey – Director Communication and Digital, Refrigeration and freezing division at Liebherr. She insists that “putting food well according to temperature areas is an essential gesture to adopt to respect the cold chain because not all foods keep under the same conditions”.

The fridge door “is the hottest area in the refrigerator” explains Ying Cai, product and marketing gem manager at TCL. It is also an area where the temperature varies often, when the door is open, then closed. Very often people keep milk and eggs there. It is a received idea, and we must absolutely forget this habit. The expert rather advises “to place them on the shelves of the environment or the bottom of the refrigerator to extend the shelf life”. The door is ideal “to store food tolerating temperature fluctuations, such as ketchup and mustard, as well as those who do not perish themselves quickly, such as bottled water and sodas” she confides to us.
To put the rest of your fridge well, here are some tips:
- The top of the fridge: more stable temperature, perfect for prepared dishes, leftovers and dairy products.
- The middle: you have to put on “cooked foods (meats, fish, fruits and vegetables), pastries, hard or semi -firm cheeses, yogurts and crème fraîche” advises Delphine Vey from the specialist in the fridge Liebherr.
- The bottom: the coldest part. The expert recommends storing “very perishable foodstuffs, namely: meats, poultry and raw fish, cold meats, fresh cheeses, crustaceans, thawing products, cooked dishes”.
- Vegetable bins: designed to keep fruits and vegetables while preventing them from drying out. You can also store cheeses to refine.
