İzmir University of Economics Medical Park Hospital hosted the Post/Long Covid 19 symposium. Participating as a speaker at the symposium where the clinical pictures consisting of the complaints that continue in the body after the coronavirus are discussed, Prof. Dr. Alper Şener said, “According to the data of CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), these clinical pictures will appear in approximately 5 million people in Turkey. A treatment template should be created for this disease group as soon as possible.”
“SEE ONE IN EVERY 10 PEOPLE”
Noting that the coronavirus infection leaves some damage to the body after the disease, Şener said, “If this process lasts longer than 3 months, we are talking about a clinical picture we call Post Covid, if it continues between 4-12 weeks on average, we call it Long Covid. I think that this disease group will gain importance in Turkey in the coming period. Because, according to the figures determined by WHO, a Post/Long Covid table is seen in one out of every 10 people who have survived the Covid-19 infection. According to these figures, it means that 50 million of the 500 million people caught Covid-19 in the world and 1.5 million of the 15 million people in Turkey will face this picture. According to CDC’s figures, this rate rises to 30 percent. If we take this ratio as a basis, it is predicted that 5 million people will be in this group.”
CHECK-UP RECOMMENDED
Stating that patients whose complaints continue after Covid 19 should be followed closely, Şener said, “After Covid 19, complaints such as difficulty in remembering, difficulty in speaking, and perception difficulties stand out, especially in the brain. In the heart, clinical pictures such as shortness of breath accompanied by palpitations, fatigue and redness appear. In the respiratory system, there is ongoing coughing, coughing attacks and serious damage to the parenchyma in the lung that continues after the seizures. On the other hand, in the musculoskeletal system, tables such as fatigue, pain and muscle cramps are encountered. That’s why we recommend that patients go through a check-up after Covid 19.”
Sener, who likens people with post-Covid 19 complaints to a floating disease group, said, “People with this complaint go to cardiology, chest diseases, neurology, infectious diseases, physical therapy. It is possible to establish a treatment template by evaluating this patient group more concretely with more concrete parameters. Our claim is to create this treatment template both at the Ministry of Health and at hospitals by sharing information with such symposiums.”
Expressing that they are happy to host the Post/Long Covid 19 symposium held for the first time in Turkey, IUE Medical Park Hospital Medical Microbiology Specialist Prof. Dr. Gülfem Terek Ece gave a speech on the fact that intestinal health and microorganisms in the intestine play an important role in this process in relation to Post/Long Covid.
