While sudden deaths have been observed in cattle in the South Asian country of Laos in recent days, the number of anthrax cases in hospitals has increased to 65.
While 54 of the cases were in the regions bordering Thailand, Thai authorities took action. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin stated that the priority is to protect public health and ordered inspection and control of animals coming from the border.
Government Spokesperson Chai Watcharong, in his statement, stated that farm animals coming from the Laos border will undergo inspection and health tests in line with the request of the prime minister, and warned animal owners about anthrax.
Watcharong also reported that Thai authorities are working closely with Laos health units and that a vaccine study has been initiated against the possibility of anthrax infection occurring in Thailand.
On the other hand, information posters about anthrax disease were hung in market places and public areas in the towns on the Laos border, and animal owners were warned to report suspicious cattle to the authorities.
