Even on a rainy day, Tyler Scott headed outside to paint Saturday in Sarnia’s Canatara Park.

The Sarnia native and Toronto resident said he fairly regularly, when in Sarnia, goes to the park with friend and former King George VI school teacher Bill Walters to paint en plein air (outdoors).

Scott said he’s been painting about five years, two outdoors.
Oil paint is fairly resilient if rain starts to fall, he said, as he added color to the nature scene on a wooden board, and Passersby commented on the piece in progress.
Walters, whom Scott called an inspiration—Scott was a student at the Sarnia elementary school when Walters was teaching—was also painting Lake Chipican, from a different perspective further along the lake’s edge.
The elder painter, who was blocking in his painting, said he’s getting pieces ready for an exhibition next spring and he typically tries for 100 plein air paintings per year.
Walters estimated he’s painted 130 in 2023.
