10:44 – What is the marking of the French exam for the brevet?

In the brevet, the French test can be worth up to 100 points, which is not insignificant when you know that you need 400 points to obtain your brevet diploma. The test itself is marked out of 40 points, like the maths and history-geography tests. The first part of the test, which includes dictation, grammar questions and the rewriting exercise, is worth 25 points, while the writing part is worth 15 points.

10:35 – The writing exercise

Back in their copy, the third year students will now have to work on the writing exercise. The candidates must first choose between two subjects of their choice, a subject of imagination and a subject of reflection, they then have until 12:15 to complete it. For this exercise, the correctors evaluate the students on their style and their inspirations but obviously also the spelling, the language and the presentation. They also pay particular attention to the respect of the instructions such as the communication situation, the organization of the assignment as well as the theme and the type of text requested.

10:23 – It’s break time!

Unlike the other tests, the French test includes a 15-minute break for students. They have until 10:30 a.m. to clear their minds, but it’s not recess. You should not lose concentration for the rest of the exam because the writing exercise that awaits them is not the simplest of the French test.

10:12 – Already 1 hour of testing

The third graders started their French test more than an hour ago now. The end of the first hour means that no more latecomers are accepted but also that students are allowed to move to go to the toilet, and for those who are not working on the test, they will be able to discover the subjects.

09:55 – More than 800,000 third-year students are affected

There are 858,409 third-year students taking on the start of the brevet exams this Monday, July 1st. Two days of testing await the 769,176 candidates in the general series, and the 89,233 in the professional series. On the program, French and maths today, then history-geography, science and a modern foreign language tomorrow.

09:43 – The first and longest patent test

The 2024 edition of the Brevet des collèges began this morning at 9:00 am with the French test. Students who have been working on the subjects for a few minutes have until 10:30 am to answer the first two parts of the test, namely a dictation and questions on grammar and language skills, comprehension and interpretation skills. They will then have a break and will resume from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm for the writing exercise.

Everything you need to know about the French certificate

During the written French exam for the brevet des collèges, on Monday, July 1, students in metropolitan France have three hours to prove themselves. This first consists of a “grammar and linguistic skills – comprehension and interpretation skills and dictation” part, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. After a dictation, the students must explain an extract from a literary text and perform grammar and rewriting exercises. After a short break, a second part dedicated to writing follows, from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

The first part, assessed out of 50 points, is based on a literary text sometimes accompanied by an image and consists of answering a series of questions on grammar, language comprehension and interpretation. Twenty minutes are dedicated to dictation, marked out of 10 points, of approximately 600 characters for students in the general series and 400 characters for the professional series. The order of the questions that follow, out of 40 points, is not insignificant: the first are rather short and address specific points of grammar while the following ones call for more developed and written answers based on quotes from the extract of the text provided to be studied.

After a short fifteen-minute break, the students return to their papers for the last part of the test: writing on a subject of invention or reflection of their choice, on which the last 50 points are played.

Every year as the brevet exams approach, several specialized platforms put online a list of subjects considered “likely” to come up on the day of the exam. These lists are formed by taking into account the themes that come up repeatedly in the exams, the program of the year as well as the annals of previous years. Their primary goal is to allow students to organize their revisions and approach this exam more calmly. However, these lists are only suppositions, so you have to revise everything to avoid failing your exam.

This year, the concepts considered “probable” for the French exam are: “Searching for oneself, building oneself (Telling oneself, representing oneself)” but also “Living in society, participating in society (Denouncing the failings of society) and “Scientific progress and dreams”. Conversely, the concepts considered “unlikely” are: “Looking at the world, inventing the world (Poetic visions of the world)” as well as “Acting on the world (Acting in the city: individual and power)”.

In the brevet, the value of each test is not calculated on the basis of a coefficient, but with a point count. As a reminder, you can obtain a maximum of 800 points during the brevet. You need a minimum of 400 points out of 800 to pass. Then, when you collect more points, you can get distinctions: you need a minimum of 480 for the mention assez bien, a minimum of 560 for the mention bien, and 640 for the mention très bien. The French test can earn you up to 100 points, so it is very important.

The date of publication of the results of patent 2024 varies depending on the academies to which they are attached but they will be available at the latest on Friday July 12, 2024.
