French police: A quarter of a million took part in demonstrations against the extreme right | News in brief

Almost a quarter of a million people took part in demonstrations against the extreme right in various parts of France on Saturday, according to the police.

The CGT union’s estimate of the number of participants was significantly higher, around 640,000 people in more than 180 demonstrations.

The protests were peaceful except for a few incidents.

The success of the far-right in the recent European elections was due to the president Emmanuel Macron to dissolve the parliament and declare early elections in the country.
