French President Emmanuel Macron has called his Defense and Security Council to a meeting on Monday to discuss the situation in the French island group of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean.

The previous two meetings held last week resulted in a state of emergency being declared and soldiers and police being sent to the island group.

The protests in the island group have now been going on for a week and broke out in connection with the introduction of changes to the voting procedure.
