FreeHelpCK is getting an early start to its sixth annual Operation Backpack program thanks to the Chatham Goodfellows.

The local volunteer organization known for helping families at Christmas has donated $2,070 to the backpack program in honor of its 70th anniversary and to help children get a good start to the new school year in September.
“We know it might seem early, but our commitment to supporting the students of Chatham-Kent remains unwavering,” said FreeHelpCK spokesperson Tim Haskell, in a media release.
The program has been a tremendous success in the past, he said, helping provide backpacks with essential supplies to more than 1,200 kids.
This year the goal is to provide 1,500 backpacks at a cost $75 each.
“Every child deserves the tools they need to succeed in their education, regardless of their financial situation,” Haskell said. “That’s why we are reaching out early this year to rally the support of our incredible community.”

He said the charitable organization is looking for people “passionate about making a difference” to volunteer with or support the backpack program through making a donation.
“Together, we can ensure that every student in our community starts the school year with the necessary supplies and a sense of excitement for their educational journey,” Haskell said.

The Facebook page is a good place to go if people want to volunteer or donate to the cause, he said.
“Even the smallest gesture can make a significant impact on a child’s life,” Haskell said.
