Every year, 150 women die from cervical cancer.

Now the Westmanland Region is looking for 1,000 women who want to vaccinate against HPV – to create group immunity.

– Celebrate Valentine’s Day with ending with Needle Moder Node cancer, says Björn Svartsgård, project manager.

So an HPV vaccination goes to: “Would have been good if more came here”

Anyone who has sex can suffer from HPV – which can lead to cervical cancer, infertility and, in the worst case, death.

Therefore, Karolinska Institutet has a research project that aims to eradicate the disease in Sweden.

– If enough women who were born between 1999 and 1994 vaccinate themselves, we can achieve what Anders Tegnell calls flock immunity. The best thing about our vaccine campaign is that the vaccine is actually completely free to take, says Björn Svartsgård, project manager for the research study.

The Full Screen Region Västmanland wants to get 1,000 women who vaccinate to achieve the goal.

Miss 1,000 women

Until the summer, free vaccine will be distributed. Then the HPV vaccine will cost about 2,000 per syringe.

In order to achieve group stimulation, all regions must vaccinate 70 percent of women in the age groups concerned.

In Region Västmanland you are close to achieving the goal – but now 1,000 women are away.

– The idea was that the project would be completed at the turn of the year, but as we are so close to reaching our goal, the study was extended for six months.

Björn Svartsgård continues:

– In Region Västmanland, we need to vaccinate 1,000 women, but of course even more. That is why we have arranged a campaign now on Valentine’s Day. In Västerås we have, among other things, opened a small vaccination booth in the square.

The hope is that it will be a love party.

– A party where you can celebrate your relationship and at the same time end up with cervical cancer.

Why do you think you should vaccinate?

– With a small stick you not only protect yourself but also others. Imagine we have the chance to eradicate a cancer, a disease that can kill. I don’t think you should wait to take the vaccine, I think you should do it now.

Facts to eradicate cervical cancer to 2027

The research project is run by the Karolinska Institute and began in 2021.

Within the framework of the project, women who have a uterus get and were born between 1999 and 1994 free HPV vaccine.

According to Joakim Dillner – who is responsible for the project – women with uterus who were born in 2000 and 2001 can also get free vaccines in some regions. However, not people born before 1994.

There are different types of HPV. Not everyone gives cancer, but some HPV virus can lead to cell changes and cancer.

Why have you started this project?

– We want to use the tools and the knowledge we have to prevent and eradicate cervical cancer, he says.

Joakim Dillner continues:

– There are no reasonable reasons to leave the cancer. Our goal is to try to stop it until 2027.

Even before the project, girls have been vaccinated since 2012 in grades four and five. Since 2020, boys of the same age also receive the vaccine.
