Fredrik Reinfeldt: “You should be allowed to stand there with your shirts on”

The Swedish fans were allowed to remain in the stadium until between 02.00 and 04.00 after the match was interrupted at 21.50. The national team shirts were hidden away so as not to make them potential targets in a situation where the lone shooter was at large and it was not known if he had helpers.

– We were told to take off our shirts but that will not be my call for the future. The open society is stronger than that where we should continue to love our football with our shirts on, but just last night it was of course wise, says Reinfeldt.

“We must dare to live on”

The next time Sweden’s men’s national team plays a match, it will be the away match in the EC qualifier against Azerbaijan in Baku on November 16.

– My hope and my love for football is about getting to stand there with your shirts on. That’s how I want it to be in the future as well, and we must dare to live on. The allure is that football draws such a large audience all over the world and that goes with it, the supporter culture that exists is fantastic, and I hope that will be shown to those who go to Baku, says Reinfeldt.
