Fraudsters stole 5,000 euros from a person because he deactivated an important setting on his cell phone

A user has his cell phone repaired while on vacation. But the repair shop employees take advantage of a mistake he made and steal several thousand euros.

A user did not want to be without his mobile phone while on vacation and therefore went to a repair shop to have his device repaired in a shop in Tenerife.

But the repair shop employees took advantage of a mistake made by the customer: he had not locked his cell phone. For this reason, the shop employees had access to apps and important data belonging to the cell phone owner.

The garage owner therefore accessed his online banking and transferred 5,000 euros to a third-party account. The victim reported the incident to the Guardia Civil, a Spanish police unit, and according to our colleagues at Applesfera.com, it was easy to find the fraudsters.

What happens next? The Guardia Civil arrested two people: one of them was the employee of the establishment and the other the person who received the transfer of 5,000 euros. Both are now in custody of the Arona Municipal Investigation Court.

The investigation is ongoing and, to protect both the victim and the perpetrators, all details have not been released. All that is known is that one person took his mobile phone to a workshop for repair and later discovered that 5,000 euros were missing from his account.

Never share passwords or unlock codes

Here’s how to prevent a similar scam: With a few simple tricks, you can prevent employees from emptying your bank account during repairs.

  • Never share your Apple ID password or the unlock code for your phone or iPhone.
  • If you have your phone repaired by a shop and the employee needs access, he or she should always do this together with you.
  • It is normal to disable Find My iPhone. This is necessary to run Apple diagnostics and replace parts.
  • Check the reviews of the shop and don’t just look at the prices. A shop that has thousands of good reviews will not want to ruin its reputation with a scam.
  • If you want to be on the safe side, log out of all important apps, such as banking or insurance apps, to protect important data or prevent access.
