Emmanuel Macron was the winner of the Presidential elections held in France. Macron was elected president for another 5 years, surpassing his rival far-right leader Marine Le Pen by far.
President Macron became the 8th president of the Fifth Republic by receiving 58.2 percent of the votes, according to the first determinations. Le Pen, on the other hand, got 41.8 percent of the vote.
48.7 million voters had the right to vote for the second round of the presidential elections, the first round of which was held on April 10 in France.
In the elections, President Emmanuel Macron, who got 27.8 percent of the votes in the first round, and Marine Le Pen, who managed to advance to the second round with 23.1 percent of the votes, competed.
Noting that the elections were uneventful across the country, the Ministry of Interior announced the turnout rate at midday as 26.4 percent. He also stated that as of 17.00 in the afternoon, this figure was 63.2.
Voting process continued until 20:00 in big cities and until 19:00 in other settlements.
When the polls were closed, the turnout was 72 percent. Accordingly, there was a historical decline in participation in the ballot box. This rate was 74.6 percent in the second round of the 2017 elections and 80.4 percent in the 2012 elections.
Due to the increase in the number of voters protesting the ballot box by saying “Neither Macron nor Le Pen”, the low turnout hit a record and 28 percent of the electorate, that is, about 14 million, did not go to the polls.
With this victory, Macron joins the few names elected to the Presidency of France for the second time.
They immediately congratulated Macron
Among the first to congratulate Macron were European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Dutch Prime Minister Rutte.
German Finance Minister Christian Lindner also said that a united Europe is the biggest winner of the French election.
Le Pen: “Keep fighting”
Acknowledging that he lost the election, Marine Le Pen stated that he would continue his political struggle against Macron in the parliamentary elections in June.
