France pensions: how do we cover ten weeks of demonstrations?

Since January 19, the inter-union opposed to the French government’s pension reform has already organized ten days of mobilization. How best to cover these events? Have processions evolved since the use of Article 49.3 of the Constitution? Journalist at RFI, Alexis Bedu followed several rallies, he says.

Demonstrators against the pension reform, March 28, 2023 in Paris.

In this episode of Witnesses to the news, Alexis Bedu recounts the editorial preparation, but also the security system before going to a demonstration. He also mentions the difficulty of having an overall vision of a procession and the evolution of the gatherings over ten weeks: “ During the first demonstrations, there were many workers, and many families with children. Since the government’s use of section 49.3, things have really changed. We also observe a radicalism in the speech of the demonstrators “. Alexis Bedu goes on to explain that coverage of these gatherings is therefore more difficult: “ The idea is to weigh every word when reporting and describe what you saw, not what you heard about. I’m not here to distribute good or bad points “.
