France: National education, level groups, why so much resistance?

France National education level groups why so much resistance

At the start of the September 2024 school year in France, 6th and 5th grade classes will now be divided into groups of need for French and mathematics lessons. This initiative is part of the “Shock of Knowledge” plan, instigated by Gabriel Attal, then Minister of National Education, with the aim of reforming the school system. This decision aroused strong opposition from teachers, who expressed their disagreement by demonstrating in the streets on April 2. Why is this measure meeting so much resistance? To understand the issues and implications, we discuss them in this episode with Laurence Théault, journalist in RFI’s France service.
