France faces a Thursday of strikes and demonstrations expected to affect transport and schools across the country. The transport minister is warning of a “devilish Thursday” due to protests against Emmanuel Macron’s government’s pension reform, which will raise the retirement age for most people in the country from 62 to 64.

France’s trade unions immediately called for mass mobilization. It is the first time that the unions have made a common cause in 12 years – that time it was also about the retirement age, which was then raised from 60 to 62 years.

French media reports that police expect between 550,000 and 750,000 protesters, including 50,000 to 80,000 in Paris.
