The fee, which was 138 euros per year (around SEK 1,435), has been the largest source of funding for public service media channels such as France Télévisions, Radio France, Arte, France 24 and RFI.

23 million French households will no longer have to pay the fee. The government has instead proposed that value added tax can finance public services in the future.

The abolition fulfills President Emmanuel Macron’s election promise from March. The question has been debated for a decade, not least in relation to the fact that international media platforms have become larger.
