April this year was the fourth warmest April recorded worldwide on record, according to the EU’s climate monitoring program Copernicus (C3S).

In southwestern Europe, temperatures were above average – with record highs in both Spain and Portugal.

“April saw exceptionally warm temperatures in Spain and Portugal, which were accompanied by extremely dry conditions,” writes Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director at C3S in a comment and continues:

“In addition to the southern European heat wave, above-average temperatures were observed across the eastern equatorial Pacific, which is an early sign of a potential transition to El Niño conditions that often lead to warmer global temperatures.”

Meanwhile, April was colder than usual in an area stretching from the UK to south-east Europe.
