Four scary causes of itchy genitals

Genital itching refers to a persistent itchy feeling in or around the penis or vagina. Itching may be related to the pubic skin and pubic hair. Hair around the groin can affect the genitals in men, and the inner and outer lips or inside of the vagina in women. Both men and women of all ages are at risk of itchy genitals. Itching can be a symptom of many conditions.

WHY IS THE GENITAL AREA ITCHED?

In both sexes, itching can be caused by skin irritation, STDs, and allergies. Genital itching can also be caused by:

  • Wearing tight and tight clothes
  • sweating a lot
  • Reaction to products such as soap, detergent, shampoo

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES

Some of the most common types of STDs that can cause genital itching are chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis.

If you are experiencing one of the sexually transmitted diseases, you may also feel a burning sensation along with itching. Before assuming you have an infection, it’s best to go to the doctor and talk to them about what’s going on.

Sweating and tight clothing

Keeping the genital area moist will cause itching. Sweat and bacteria can become trapped in fabrics and, accordingly, irritate the skin. Sweat and bacteria can also disrupt the skin’s natural microbiome, leading to infection, acne or dermatitis (skin irritation).

SOAP, SHAMPOO, DETERGENT…

Soap is the most common cause of genital itching, especially in young women. It can also cause the area to become red and sore. Some soaps, lotions, and other hygiene and skin care products can cause contact dermatitis, which is a skin irritation.

Along with itching, contact dermatitis can also cause dry and flaky skin. Occasional itching anywhere on the body, even the groin area, is probably nothing to worry about. However, persistent genital itching can be caused by allergies, damage to hair follicles, or an infection.

In most cases, itchy genitals caused by irritation will heal on their own if the irritant is removed. Other causes of itching may require more intensive treatment. If you are worried about itching in your genital area that does not go away, talk to your doctor about the possible cause and causes.
