Four men, two of whom are brothers, are charged with, among other things, preparation for terrorist crimes and participation in a terrorist organization after a high-profile attack on a mosque in Tyresö, south of Stockholm, this spring.

The investigation shows that the terrorist crime has international links to IS, primarily IS in Somalia, but also to people under terrorist-related investigation abroad, according to a press release from the Prosecutor’s Office.

The people in the case have had different roles, but all have a connection to an Islamic cultural association in Tyresö, where the police raided on March 7 this year.

“This is an extensive and complex investigation with international elements where I believe I can prove the crime. Part of the evidence consists of the fact that a person has sworn allegiance to IS and actively searched for underage perpetrators who, among other things, would carry out attacks. Even if we did not find the weapon that was used in the crime of preparation, I believe that the evidence in that part is strong,” says senior prosecutor Lars Hedvall, who is the head of the preliminary investigation, in a comment.

The suspected crime must have taken place from September 2023 to the crackdown in March this year.

According to Säpo, the crackdown, which took place at various locations in Tyresö, had been prompted by an investigation that had been conducted “over a long period of time” together with the police.

The two brothers who are charged, aged 23 and 25, are said to have converted to Islam some time before the intervention and started dressing differently. One of them is said to have also shared jihadist propaganda on social media, according to a survey made by SVT Nyheter.

All four who are charged have stated that they deny any crime. A fifth person has also been detained in the case, but he was released in October when the suspicions against him were dropped.
