– I am very happy because this is the best recognition you can get as a doctor and manager in Sweden, says Åke Åkesson to SVT.
SVT has on several occasions told about the work with the Borgholm model. Basically, it means that a maximum ceiling was set for the number of patients for which each doctor must be responsible. This creates a more humane working environment and should attract more doctors to want to work.
– In January 2016, the epoch-making work for frail elderly started, which came to be known as Hemsjukhuset, and which is the one of our working methods that has spread the most across the country. The term “Borgholm model” was coined in an article in Läkartidningen in January 2018, says Åke Åkesson.
Independent of chartered physician
The model has been successful. When SVT met Åke Åkesson in 2019, they had made themselves completely independent of hired doctors, and now Åke Åkesson is being praised by the Medical Association.
The justification states:
“With his leadership, Åke has shown what a well-staffed health center with a good working environment can achieve. By listening to the staff in parallel with meeting the needs of the patients, he has developed a model that has become known throughout healthcare Sweden.
With great creativity and initiative as well as a strong desire to improve the conditions for doctors in primary care, Åke has proven that the vision of good and close care is possible to achieve”.
The honorary prize is awarded in connection with the General Council of the Medical Association in 2022. The prize sum is SEK 25,000.
