Fouad’s USA: James swings wooden weapons to afford food

GDP: The growth rate was high during both terms. GDP grew by 2.7 percent during Trump’s first three years as president. During Biden’s first three years, the corresponding figure was 3.5.

Growth was very low in the pandemic year 2020, and very high in 2021.

Inflation: Trump saw significantly lower inflation during his time as president, around 6 percent in Trump’s first 3.5 years. The corresponding figure for Biden has been higher, 19 percent.

Labor market: Unemployment skyrocketed during the 2020 pandemic, peaking at 14.9 percent. Before that, however, unemployment had fallen from 4.7 percent to 3.5 percent during Trump’s time as president. The 15 percent wage increases during Trump’s tenure also beat the rate of inflation.

Biden has also delivered strong labor market numbers. Unemployment has fallen from 6.7 percent down to 4.2 and wages have increased 18 percent, albeit during a time of high inflation.

National debt: Both Biden and Trump significantly increased the US national debt, not least because of the pandemic. The national debt increased by 39 percent during Trump’s years and by another 25 percent during Biden’s term.

Footnote: It is difficult to make economic comparisons between the two periods, especially the covid-19 pandemic’s enormous impact on the economy of the world and the US makes comparability between the two periods difficult.
