Because when Uytdehaage rode his world record, the folding skate was already there, and there were also aerodynamic suits, nutritionists and professional training methods. What has changed then, which means that Ghiotto drives more than half a minute faster than the Utrechter in 2002? “The tubes of the skates are much more stable, the skating suits are further optimized, and the ice quality is also improving,” says Uytdehaage. And then there are also small changes. “Ghiotto drives the entire race with two hands on his back. That doesn’t save for a second, but he will win time with it.”
