Former Säpo chief on the spy arrest: “We are in a serious situation”

There has been a lot of talk about spies lately, and yesterday a woman was arrested in Gothenburg on suspicion of corporate espionage. “There is an increased security threat to Sweden – this applies to both terrorism and foreign states’ interest in Sweden,” says former Säpo head Klas Friberg. On Friday, a woman was arrested in the port of Gothenburg on suspicion of corporate espionage on behalf of Russia. “Working hard” Friberg believes that we are in a serious situation and that there is a drive in Russia to increase intelligence gathering in Sweden in a number of sectors. — We are in a serious situation, I claim. But as former head of Säpo, Klas Friberg feels safe with the work that the security police do. — I know that the security police are working very hard on this. I feel safe that they see what they need to see and they fix what they need to fix, he says in Nyhetsmorgon. Wants Swedish drones Klas Friberg left his post as Head of Säpo 1.5 years ago after a long professional life in the police. Today, he remains committed to the country’s security both through Swedish-made drones and the ongoing fight against gang crime. He is critical of Swedish authorities using drones manufactured in China. “We must do more to ensure that Chinese drones with electronics connected to the drones do not fly around in a lot of government activities in Sweden,” he says.
