Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigns from the British Parliament

The background to Johnson’s resignation is the investigation, according to which he lied about the parties organized at the prime minister’s official residence during the corona restrictions.

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he will leave the country’s parliament immediately. With the decision to resign, a by-election will be held to fill Johnson’s position.

Johnson’s resignation is related to the investigation by the House of Commons of the British Parliament, which concerned the parties organized by the former prime minister during the corona lockdowns. The committee that conducted the investigation ended up proposing a punishment for Johnson, as it is suspected that he deliberately lied to the House of Commons about complying with the corona restrictions.

“A small group of people are forcing me out (of parliament) without evidence to support their accusations and without even the approval of the Conservative Party, let alone the wider electorate,” Johnson said in a press release.

According to Johnson, most of the members of the investigating committee had already decided in advance that he was guilty, and the process was neither useful nor fair.

The committee was due to release its report on the inquiry in the coming weeks, and Johnson could have been suspended from the House of Commons. By resigning himself, he avoided possible removal from his seat and kept the possibility of running for parliament again.

He hinted that he might try to return to parliament later.

– It is very sad to leave the parliament, at least for now, but I am most surprised and horrified that I can be forced out.
