According to the national media report, Chavez, who was taken from his home in the city of Tacna under the supervision of police teams, was temporarily taken to a prison on the border with Chile.
Chavez, for whom the prosecutor’s office requested 18 months of preventive imprisonment, said in his statement on his Tik Tok account before he was taken into custody that he was calmly waiting for the police at his home.
Chavez, who argued that the detention order against him was not notified by the court, stated that he felt the power of millions of Peruvians behind him.
The prosecution accuses former Prime Minister Chavez of taking part in the failed coup attempt against Congress along with Peruvian former President Pedro Castillo.
WHY DEATH?
Former Peruvian President Castillo was impeached by Congress on December 7, 2022, on charges of “permanent moral incompetence”, accusing him of overthrowing the government.
The reason for the dismissal of Castillo in the congress was given as “the usurpation of public duties, hindering the functioning of state powers and trying to violate the constitutional order”.
Pedro Castillo was detained after his decision to dissolve Congress and form a national emergency government.
