Order of Canada member Crooks, who won served 4x400m silver at the 1984 Olympics and competed in the next three summer games, on International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission committees, and founded NGU Consultants Inc., has been selected by the Sarnia Lambton Chamber of Commerce’s women in business committee to address the March 7 event at the Point Edward Best Western Guildwood Inn, said chamber chief executive Carrie McEachran.

“We spend a lot of time looking at potential people that we could bring to Sarnia-Lambton who would really impact the community as well as the business community,” McEachran said.

“So her name came up (and) with the entrepreneurial background and her a five-time Olympian. . . we were really quite excited that she was able to attend.”

About 200 tickets are available for the two-hour, noon-2 pm luncheon that aims to inspire inclusion and “empower women in professional roles and women business owners,” McEachran said.

“We’re really hoping to. . . reach to some younger people — some budding soccer players within Sarnia-Lambton that may be interested in coming and getting inspired and empowered by this speaker,” he added.

“Really our goal is to have everyone leave feeling inspired.”

The chamber, McEachran said, has events held since 2022 marking March 8 — the day inaugurated by the United Nations in 1975 to focus on celebrating women’s achievement, pushing for gender parity and raising awareness of discrimination.

“Our women business owners and women working for women business owners. . . had really shown some interest in the chamber (showing) more support for women in business in Sarnia-Lambton,” McEachran said.

“We have a really vibrant committee of business owners and professionals within the community that meet on a regular basis to plan these events.”

Tickets are available from the chamber’s Robin Cooke, at 519-336-2400 or [email protected]by visiting slchamber.ca.
