In the press release broadcast on Israeli state television KAN, Gallant stated that he resigned from his seat as a member of parliament but will remain a member of the Likud party led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Announcing his resignation, citing the law exempting Haredim from military service and supported by government members, Gallant argued that the government supported “a military recruitment law that contradicts the needs of the Israeli army and the security of the state.”
Gallant criticized the government, claiming that he still believed in the values of the Likud party, of which he stated that he would remain a member.
Describing the government’s controversial judicial reform as a “clear and present danger”, Gallant emphasized that Yisrael Katz and Netanyahu, who became the defense minister after him, were trying to exempt Haredim from military service and that he could not be a party to such a thing.
