A soccer player who played for Helsingborgs IF last season was convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl and sentenced to two years in prison at the Helsingborg district court. But now the Court of Appeal acquits the prosecution, as it makes “a different assessment of the evidence in the case”, the court writes in a press release.

New witnesses must have been added, which according to the court means that “it is beyond reasonable doubt that the man was guilty of the charged act”.

The crime was committed in Helsingborg at the end of May this year and was reported in September. The player was arrested at the beginning of November and a few days later the club announced that it had terminated the contract with the player.

The man has denied any wrongdoing.
