A right-wing president Nicolas Sarkozy managed France in 2007-2012.
Tomorrow, Monday, the court will discuss whether he used the money he received from the former leader of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, who was deposed and killed in 2011, for his presidential election campaign.
The 69-year-old Sarkozy has strongly denied having received or used funding from Libya.
In December, Sarkozy was the first former French head of state to be sentenced to prison for illegal campaign financing in 2012. He was seeking a new term at the time.
Sarkozy was originally sentenced to three years in prison, but the sentence was reduced by the appeals court to one year, half of which is suspended. In practice, Sarkozy is serving his sentence outside prison wearing an electronic monitoring collar.
