According to prosecutors, Menendez also directed military assistance to Egypt, helped Qatar and involved in local legal proceedings in return for bribes.
His lawyers are trying to obtain the calculated judgment in just over two years. They appealed, among other things, to the high age of the 71-year-old Menendez, decades of working for the federal state and charity work.
Menendez has said he would complain about the judgment.
Last July, the jury stated that Menendez was guilty of corruption. At the same time, he became the first US senator to have been guilty of acting as a foreign agent.
Last August, Menndez also left his place in the Senate. He was a senator for New Jersey for over 18 years.
