As we eagerly await the arrival of the Avatar sequels, Arte is showing one of Cameron’s films on TV tonight, in light of his other big screen epics often goes under. But he didn’t deserve it at all. Because Abyss is one of his best directing works ever.
Abyss: Forgotten sci-fi masterpiece from Avatar creator James Cameron with stunning underwater imagery
Abyss brings together two of Cameron’s greatest interests. On the one hand we have one ambitious science fiction film, whose style tests the limits of blockbuster cinema. On the other hand, another underwater adventure awaits us in the depths of the sea.

The Abyss – Remastered in 4K Trailer (English) HD
Much of the story takes place beneath the surface of the water. The action is triggered by a collision with one unknown object. In the middle of the ocean, the nuclear submarine USS Montana encounters something mysterious and then sinks to the bottom of the sea. Now a special team should rush to the rescue before the enemy arrives.
This special team includes, among others, engineer Linsdey Brigman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) and Lieutenant Hiram Coffey (Michael Biehn). They are very familiar with the secrets of the deep sea. However, they soon have to throw all their knowledge overboard. What they find down there goes beyond your imagination.
Abyss is one of those films that draws you deeper and deeper into its mysterious world. Just like the characters, we wander through the darkness before we are blinded by a bright bluish light. Cameron’s film feels the same way Dream and nightmare at. A completely underrated sci-fi epic.
