Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s government was also predicted to lose in the last election, but the opposite happened.
Australia is currently voting in parliamentary elections. In the eastern part of the country, voting has already ended and the counting of votes has begun.
According to a forecast made by two TV channels Scott Morrison the Conservative government, led by the Conservative government, is suffering a defeat and losing its majority in parliament. Australia’s 150-seat parliament therefore requires 76 seats to get a majority.
According to the forecast, the opposition Labor Party will also lose seats, but smaller parties, Greens and independent candidates with an emphasis on climate policy will gather so many seats that the governing coalition will not gain a majority.
Finance or public services?
A conservative coalition of Liberals and the National Party has ruled Australia for a decade. The coalition was also predicted to lose in the previous election, but Morrison managed to turn the majority over for himself.
Morrison has recently been criticized for his overly steep leadership style. In his election campaign, he has emphasized the country’s economy and blocking the entry of asylum seekers. He promises to cut taxes, which would make it easier for citizens to suffer from rising costs.
The most prominent representative of the opposition is the chairman of the Labor Party Anthony Albanese, which is set to become the country ‘s next prime minister. Albanese has pointed out in his campaign that he comes from humble circumstances, so he understands the need for public services.
Climate policy is rising?
Climate policy has also come to the fore in the campaigns. Australia has suffered from severe heat and wildfires. Neither major conglomerate wants to shut down Australia’s large coal industry.
Conservatives are proposing a 26 percent cut in the country’s CO2 emissions from 2005 levels by 2030. The Labor Party is proposing a 43 percent reduction. Independent candidates who demand tougher deductions may rise to the balance.
Voting is mandatory in Australia for all adults.
The announcement of the election results comes at a special time as the Australian leadership plans to travel to the Tokyo summit on Monday morning, attended by the President of the United States. Joe BidenPrime Minister of India Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida. It is possible that the result will only become clear when the party leaders sit on the plane en route to Tokyo.
