For the first time a publicly non binary artist won Eurovision

24-year-old Nemo Mettler is the first publicly non-binary Eurovision winner.

This year’s Eurovision winner is a Swiss 24-year-old Nemo or Nemo Mettler. He won with the song The Code.

Nemo is the first publicly non-binary artist to win the Eurovision Song Contest.

He also considers his win important because he wants to raise awareness about non-binary people and other sexual and gender minorities. A non-binary person’s gender identity does not fit the bipolar male-female division.

In his song, he sings about zeros and ones, from which all numbers are formed in the binary system.

– If I don’t belong to zero or one, then where do I belong? We all have boundaries to break, he said in an interview with at the opening of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Nemo has been a well-known artist in his home country of Switzerland for a long time, and his nomination for the talent aroused great enthusiasm in advance.

Eurovision according to the introduction he became famous already in 2016 with his appearance on the radio show. After that, Nemo released two EPs and his songs also reached the Swiss singles chart.

From 2020, Nemo started writing and producing songs for other artists as well. At that time, he started publishing his own songs in English as well.

“The most incredible thing is that my story touched so many”

– The most incredible thing is that a song that has changed my own life, and a song in which I tell my own story has touched so many and perhaps inspired others to be honest with their own story, he said at the press conference after the show.

Jubilant Swiss were also seen in Malmö.

– Nemo’s message is important. It shows that Switzerland and Europe and the world are really open. We accept everything and in fact we break the boundaries, said the manager of the Swiss Eurovision club Melisa Kaymaz.

Nemo also commented on the exceptionally tense atmosphere of this year’s wise men. The background was, among other things, the conflicts caused by Israel’s participation. Security risks were feared in advance.

– The whole experience was really intense and not just pleasant. Things happened that didn’t seem to be about love and unity. It felt sad, he said.

At the same time, according to him, there was a lot of community, love and meeting of cultures in the event.

– You just have to work for such an atmosphere. I really hope that Eurovision can be about peace and love.
