For the end-of-year holidays, Orange is launching the SaferPhone offer, which includes a mobile plan, a security suite and an affordable smartphone. But is it as interesting as promised?
In a context of high inflation which weighs heavily on household wallets, families are looking for the slightest savings, no matter how small. Operators are taking advantage of this to launch new offers in order to attract parents and encourage them to subscribe their children. Thus, Free recently unveiled its new Free Family offer, to which Bouygues Telecom responded with B.iG, which seems to be more flexible and more interesting. For its part, SFR had adopted a different approach with SFR Multi, which makes it easier to share gigabytes on the different lines in a household and to benefit from numerous advantages in order to save money.
But then, what about Orange? As Christmas approaches, the operator is launching an intriguing offer: the SaferPhone. He wants to be like a “offer that reconciles parents and teenagers” thanks to a mobile plan, a security suite and the possibility of acquiring a good phone for cheap.
Orange SaferPhone: a package, a security service and a mobile
Orange’s SaferPhone offer includes a 50 GB 5G Special Series package at €21.99 per month for Livebox customers or €28.99 per month for new customers, with a 24-month commitment. It allows you to benefit from unlimited calls, SMS/MMS in France as well as from Europe, the French Overseas Territories, Switzerland and Andorra, and 50 GB of data. Please note, the offer is not valid for customers with an Orange or Sosh offer changing their plan.
The SaferPhone pack also includes 12 months of free subscription to Orange Cybersecure, after which you will have to pay €7 per month – but it will be possible to unsubscribe from the option at that time. This service filters unwanted calls, blocks malicious links in SMS, email and Internet, and allows you to contact a specialist cyber advisor by telephone 7 days a week, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Small advantage: it allows you to cover up to 10 devices, even for a single plan.
The pack also entitles you, completely optional, to a refurbished 64 GB iPhone 12 at a price of €99 thanks to the phone trade-in bonus, or €149 without it. It is certified by the RecQ label, which guarantees its quality, and benefits from a 24-month commercial guarantee. But it is entirely possible to choose another smartphone, or not to choose one at all. Note that Orange also offers an Honor 70 Lite 5G or a Xiaomi Redmi Note 12, not refurbished, for €79. In addition, there is another discount exclusive to the SaferPhone pack, namely on a non-refurbished Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro at €99, again with the trade-in bonus.
In addition to the technological offering, Orange also includes a Trust Pact to be signed between parents and adolescents. This symbolic document is intended to “encourage healthy digital practices“, such as installing parental controls, protecting personal information, configuring your social networks, limiting your screen time, taking advantage of moments of disconnection, etc. Finally, the operator provides a dedicated space on its Bien vivre site digital Parents will be able to find free advice, tips and workshops to guide their young ones in healthy and balanced use of digital technology.
Orange SaferPhone: nice packaging for a not-so-great deal
The SaferPhone offer is currently available until February 7, 2025. The historic operator reserves the right to extend it thereafter. In detail, the pact encourages healthy digital practices and seeks to give parents an active role in the digital practices of their children. This is an excellent initiative at a time when young people are increasingly exposed to digital dangers.
But the pack fails on one point: the price. Firstly, the package itself is extremely expensive. Today, you can easily find 5G offers for less than 10 euros, with unlimited calls, SMS and MMS, all including a good data package, including from major operators (see our article). It’s Orange. The operator is known for offering overpriced subscriptions.
Now let’s talk about the laptop. Considering its technical sheet, the iPhone 12 remains competitive in 2024, thanks to its A14 Bionic processor and its balanced specifications. With its OLED screen and 5G compatibility, this is a good refurbished Apple product, which you can get here at a reasonable price. Afterwards, you have to like Apple, because it is still a rather particular ecosystem, which may not please everyone. Fortunately, it’s completely optional and, with the promotions that take place throughout the year – and not just during sales, French Days or Black Friday – you can find very good smartphones at very low prices. interesting, including reconditioned.
As for the Orange Cybersecure offer, it is double-edged because it is only free for the first year. Its price subsequently becomes quite expensive, even if it is possible to unsubscribe. This is a way for the operator to attract customers by getting them a foot in the door, counting on the fact that they will “forget” to unsubscribe or will have gotten into the habit of using the service. In short, SaferPhone is a nice Orange-labeled package – it is still the number one operator in terms of quality – for an offer that is not so great. The customer partly pays on behalf of the operator. Don’t hesitate to look elsewhere, even if it necessarily takes more time.
