For some users, WhatsApp eats up almost 80 GB on their cell phones – this is how you can easily turn off the annoying “feature”.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular apps on many cell phones. But some users complain that the messaging app on their cell phones is far too big. There is a problem behind this that can at least be solved fairly easily.

Storage space on cell phones is usually very limited, because on many devices the storage cannot be expanded as desired. It’s not surprising that many users are fighting for every free gigabyte. Now some users on Reddit are complaining that the popular app Whatsapp is taking up large amounts of storage space.

There is a function behind this that WhatsApp automatically activates, but which can be switched off. You can read what’s behind it and what you can do on MeinMMO.

Automatic media download fills your phone’s system memory

What is the problem? In addition to text messages, many users also send pictures and videos around. In the basic setting with WhatsApp, this data is automatically downloaded from the chats. The idea behind it is simple: If you open your chat, you can directly view the video or pictures.

The problem, however, is that all downloaded data is backed up locally on your device. If you’re in a ton of groups and people are constantly sending media files, WhatsApp will save them locally. And that can quickly mean a full cell phone.

But with just a few clicks you can switch off the automatic download completely. We explain to you how this works on MeinMMO.

This is how you prevent this: You can switch off automatic media downloads in WhatsApp settings.

  • To do this, open WhatsApp and go to the settings.
  • Here you then select the Storage and Data section
  • Here you will find the item “Automatic download of media”
  • Here you select both “with a mobile data connection” and “with a WLAN connection” one after the other and uncheck all the boxes. Now media will no longer download automatically.
  • If you now want to see pictures or videos in the chat, you have to confirm the download manually on your cell phone.

Can the data be deleted? In principle, you can easily delete the folder with all the pictures and videos, but then they are really gone. If you are attached to certain images, it is best to save them externally or in another folder beforehand. A backup is very easy if you log in to Whatsapp using the desktop client.

Beware of strange offers: Basically, you should be careful if you receive strange messages on WhatsApp or other apps. This has now happened to a developer: the victim received a message on WhatsApp claiming that he could earn more money if he took part in a part-time job. But instead he lost a lot of money:
