“For me it’s better than Baldur’s Gate 3”

The new role-playing game Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is currently exciting players. Although it attracts fewer players than genre mogul Baldur’s Gate 3, Warhammer fans in particular believe that the game is an even bigger hit for them.

What kind of game is this?

  • Rogue Trader is a classic role-playing game, or CRPG, set in the dystopian future of Warhammer 40k. There, people are at constant war with space elves, orcs and chaos demons.
  • In Rogue Trader you play an eponymous “free trader” who has special powers: you explore the outer reaches of the universe and can even circumvent laws if you find it necessary.
  • Rogue Trader was released on December 7th for PC (Steam, GOG, Epic), PS5 and Xbox.
  • This is how Rogue Trader arrives: Players are enthusiastic about Rogue Trader. In the PS Store the game has a rating of 4.7/5 stars, and on Steam it is “very positive” with 84% of reviews.

Our colleagues at GameStar rate the game similarly. In an initial evaluation, Rogue Trader has a preliminary score of 85-90. But the end has not yet been reached.

Rogue Trader is particularly well received by Warhammer fans. A player on Steam writes, for example, that even if the game doesn’t come close to the presentation of Baldur’s Gate 3, for him it is the better game: “mature and without adolescent influences.”

The implementation of the world in the style of a tabletop game works particularly well. Although there are no classic “classes” and the alignment is different, Rogue Trader feels like a strong role-playing game. For newcomers, the game is a “great introduction to Warhammer 40k.”

The gameplay is particularly reminiscent of XCOM. In addition to spells and melee weapons like in Baldur’s Gate 3, projectile weapons, plasma throwers and laser rifles are also used.

The bigger and only point of criticism that is mentioned again and again are the bugs. These already caused severe deductions in the international rankings. The developers are currently working on patches for this.

I have now sunk over 20 hours into the game and have a similar opinion: Rogue Trader plays excellently. I have hardly noticed any bugs so far, apart from typos in the German text.

It’s difficult to call the game “better” than Baldur’s Gate 3, especially since it has only just been named the best game of the year. Rogue Trader is different: more text and less spoken dialogue, less elaborate cutscenes and not as visually appealing. The decisions are also a little more limited, but have just as big an impact and emotions.

All in all, Rogue Trader is definitely worth it for anyone who enjoyed Baldur’s Gate 3 and now wants to explore other universes, and especially for Warhammer fans. Lore nerds will find tons of content to enjoy here.
