For 26 years there has been a rule in Digimon that applies to almost every protagonist

There are now 9 seasons of the Digimon anime. With two exceptions, each of the main heroes wears aviator glasses. This is a tradition based on planned content.

What kind of tradition is this? Almost every male Digimon main character, who is considered the most important hero of the season and leads the group, wears aviator glasses. The rule was only broken in 2 of the 9 seasons:

  • There was an exception in the 5th season of Digimon Data Squad. Marcus Damon, the protagonist of the season, does not wear aviator glasses.
  • Hiro Amanokawa, the hero from the 9th season of Digimon Ghost Game, also doesn’t wear glasses.

    • Actually, Hiro was supposed to wear aviator glasses too. In an initial design, the boy was still seen with the practical accessory, but his illustrator wanted to draw him without glasses and enforced this request. Why he did this is not known.

    But we do know why aviator glasses became a tradition in the Digimon anime. The origin is based on an artistic decision that dates back to the release of Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01.

    Pilot glasses become a tradition in Digimon due to planned air battles

    Why do these glasses exist? The first full-length Digimon manga was released in 1998 under the title Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01. In it, we were able to experience the adventures of Tai Kamiya. He looks very similar to Tai from Season 1 of the Digimon anime, but is an alternate version of him.

    Tai already had the distinctive aviator glasses on his head. This idea came from Yabuno Tenya, the artist of the manga. His idea was to incorporate air battles into the story. That’s why Tai was given the aviator glasses, because they would be a practical tool in air battles.

    Yabuno Tenya also made a pact with Digimon Adventure’s character designer, Nakatsuru Katsuyoshi. The character designer from the first season of the anime also used the aviator glasses for the series. The glasses were seen from the first anime episode and became an unwritten rule that almost all of the anime’s protagonists follow.

    Digimon has now established itself as a successful franchise. There is even an MMORPG that revolves around the digital monsters. But unfortunately we can’t play the game in Germany yet: Old Digimon MMORPG returns 10 years after being shut down – is it worth it?
