Football: Sven-Göran Eriksson is buried in Torsby

The procession goes from the church to a homestead where the day ends with a speech.

A lot of international guests are expected, including big football names. But according to Gustavsson, the coaching legend was careful that he wanted “ordinary people” in the bench rows.

– Torsby residents and Värmlanders, not some VIP event, that was his will. The church holds 600 people, so the idea is that we reserve 100 seats and then it will be open to walk-in only. If people cannot be accommodated, the church must set up a screen outside, he says.

In January 2024, Eriksson announced that he had suffered from pancreatic cancer, and he therefore died a week ago.

Led the English national team

“Svennis” broke through as a coach in IFK Göteborg, which he led to victory in the Uefa Cup in 1982.

It was the starting point for greater coaching success in club football in Europe, eventually leading all the way to the England captaincy job – a job that only Britons have had before him.
