Just over a week after Malmö FF secured the SM gold and added Allsvenskan 2024 to the agenda, they traveled to Istanbul in the hope of three important points in the hunt for a playoff spot in the Europa League.

After an even start to the match, it was Malmö that accounted for most of the hot goal chances both in the first and a bit into the second half. Isaac Kiese Thelin, who recently extended his contract with Malmö by two years, was at the center of several chances.

The young talent scored his first EL goal

But despite that, it was the home team that finally broke the deadlock. Ernest Muci received a cross from the right wing after a nice run by the Norwegian Jonas Svensson and was able to easily put the ball behind Ricardo Friedrich in the Malmö goal in the 76th minute.

Nine minutes later, 19-year-old Semih Kilicsoy doubled that lead when he scored his first Europa League goal with a low shot into the far post.

Consolation goal in added time

Despite that, the visitors did not lose momentum. With two minutes left in added time, Sören Rieks managed to reduce for Malmö after a pass from Anders Christiansen, who got through the home defense. The referee waved the offside flag and but the goal was approved after VAR review.

In the final minutes, Malmö chased an equaliser, but after Nils Zätterström lost the ball early in the attack attempt, Besiktas was able to turn around and keep the ball in the last seconds.

Malmö FF have now lost three out of four matches in the Europa League this year.
