About a year ago, Brazilian icon Pelé had to have surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his colon and has since been treated with chemotherapy.

Earlier this week, Pelé was re-hospitalized as his body no longer responded to chemotherapy, before being admitted to palliative care on Saturday, according to local media.

During Brazil’s match against Cameroon in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the soccer legend was honored with a giant flag that was unfurled on the short side behind one of the goals at the Lusail Stadium.

Pelé is the only male soccer player to win the World Cup three times. The Brazilian striker scored 767 goals in 831 official matches during his career. Including training matches, Pelé has scored over 1,200 goals, most of them for the club team Santos FC.
