Football German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer retires from international football

Former German national team captain Manuel Neuer announced on Wednesday, August 21, that he is ending his international career at the age of 38. “After long and intense discussions with my family and friends, I have decided to end my career with the Nationalmannschaft. Everyone who knows me knows that it was not an easy decision to make,” explained Manuel Neuer, who has 124 international caps and is still under contract for a year with Bayern Munich, in a video on his Instagram account and in a press release. The goalkeeper made his debut in the national team’s goal on June 2, 2009, in a friendly match won 7-2 against the United Arab Emirates. In competition with René Adler, he established himself as a starter before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Named best goalkeeper of the year five times (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2020), the 2014 world champion has remained number one in the German goal despite recurring injuries since 2017. His retirement should allow Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen to be the new starter for the Nationalmannschaft.
