Portugal defeated Slovenia on penalties to advance to the European Championship quarter-finals.

But what people were talking about afterwards were Ronaldo’s tears.

European Championship in soccer

  • Portuguese Diogo Costa made history after the penalty drama in the EC Round of 16 against Slovenia

  • Portugal through to the European Championship quarter-finals after penalty drama against Slovenia

  • In the closing stages of the first quarter of extra time, Portugal were awarded a penalty and the attacking icon stepped forward from eleven yards. The penalty was hit hard against the right post, but goalkeeper star Jan Oblak went in the right direction and saved.

During the short break before the second quarter of extra time, Ronaldo looked inconsolable and wept openly. SVT’s expert Hanna Marklund cannot remember seeing a similar situation at this level.

    – He cries uncontrollably. There are a lot of emotions and reactions from Ronaldo, there are just a lot of things coming up all the time, says Marklund.

Marklund on Ronaldo: Sluggish and frustrated

The Portuguese is still waiting for his first goal in this year’s EC and Marklund thinks the 39-year-old has looked sluggish so far.

    – Sometimes he looks extremely frustrated. He has not had the flexibility, timing and clarity that you are used to seeing.

    What does he bring?

    – During periods in the matches I actually feel that he adds nothing. But periodically he makes sensible runs and is on the move around situations that arise, after all, no one wants to score as much as Ronaldo. But the question is how much energy he contributes to the team with all his gestures and extreme expressions.

For Portugal, the quarter-finals against France await on Friday.
