Food waste Cia biocontrol defends agri food with natural systems

(Finance) – In optics From Farm to Fork the new agricultural practices are the solution to reverse the global crisis and fight food waste, with the possibility of extending the shelf life of fruit and vegetables to achieve a sustainable food system. Thanks to the innovative methodology of biological control (biocontrol), which consists in the use of natural organisms (beneficial insects, microorganisms, pheromones, natural substances) able to fight parasites, bacteria and harmful pathogens of plants, they are also reduced food losses along production and supply chains. The goal is to facilitate the transition from synthetic chemistry to bioproducts of natural origin in agriculture, in the logic of a reductionby 2030 of 50% of the use of chemical pesticides.

With this purposeCia-Agricoltori Italiani has launched a digital innovation project in 100 farms with IBMA Italy, the association of operators in the bioprotection industry, for active training and field trials of these new technologies. Food waste is a growing problem that cannot be ignored. To reverse this trend, CIA believes that a radical transformation of our agri-food system is necessary, which must start from agricultural practices and extend along the entire value chain: production, processing, storage, export, distribution and domestic consumption. Advances in new solutions bioprotection can, therefore, play a significant role in the reduction of inefficiencies and food waste on farms, by borrowing tools from nature’s toolbox.

Research in recent years has shown how thanks to the protection of biocontrol, farmers can increase the actions to combat parasites, to extend the shelf life of fresh fruit and vegetables and ensure healthier and safer foods on our tables. For Cia – concludes the note – “the diffusion of these methodologies in Italy is an ambitious project that starts from agronomic experimentation and must arrive at the practice of the farmer. A necessary challenge that requires great strides both culturally and in terms of investments, where research and innovation must be able to contemplate the biocontrol in green agricultural development, helping to give a future to bio and integrated production “.
