Jean-Michel Cohen (Nutritionist)
In his new work, Dr Jean-Michel Cohen investigated food supplements. He reviews more than 500 of them. And surprisingly, their composition reveals the presence of additives in some of them.
Whether to gain vitality, improve digestion or find sleep more easily, food supplements promise wonders. However, they are not all equal. In his latest work, entitled “Food supplements – Make the right choice” published by First editions, the nutritionist warns of the presence of additives, for some of them.
Food supplements, sources of additives
In the book, we find a classification of food supplements, with for each of them their benefits, their composition and therefore the possible presence of additives. The doctor reveals that titanium dioxide (E171) is found in many lozenges and capsules.
However, this additive has been banned from food because it is suspected of being carcinogenic. “From castor oil to formaldehyde and butylated hydroxyanisole, the list of these excipients with notorious effects, which can cause intolerances, is long. confides the expert.
Choose ampoules and read the labels!
To choose the right food supplements, Jean-Michel Cohen gives three tips. He recommends first of all reading the labels and – as with food products – choosing those with the shortest list of excipients.
Then, the doctor advises when possible to favor ampoules, which will have a more neutral composition. Finally, also pay attention to where you buy your supplements: choose a pharmacy or drugstore. And if you have to obtain your supplies on the Internet, prefer a known laboratory or an organic brand, because “everyone can distribute food supplements, there is no control” warns the doctor.
What food supplements does Dr. Cohen recommend?
Finally, in his work, the doctor gave “favorites” and “comforts” to several products analyzed. Among his favorites, we can report:
- For vitality, Berocca effervescent energywhich contains vitamins and minerals in sufficient doses to boost you;
- For transit, the Lactibiane reference from Pileje, which is composed of strains of probiotics rigorously selected for their effectiveness;
- For the anti-stress side, Ergymag by Nutergia which contains magnesium in different forms to ensure better bioavailability as well as a concentration of active ingredients;
- Against painful joints, Chondrosteo Marine collagen joint from Granions, which contains several types of collagen associated with effective active ingredients for the joints;
- And finally, for menopause, Climax from NHCO, which does not contain soy or phytoestrogens.
